When I saw this bottle lamp from Maison Martin Margiela, I thought: I can do this! So I grabbed that empty bottle of wine and bought a cheap lampshade to match it. This is how it turned out:
I think it looks pretty good considering it only cost me about 4 euros to make! DIY on how to make your own bottle lamp:
1. Get an old wine bottle.
2. Get a diamond tipped drill, or use a simple engraving device like I did. Mine came from the Lidle, and was only ten euros. Place your bottle on a something soft like a towel and start drilling. If you are drilling with the diamond tipped drill, make sure to cool the glass of every minute or so. The drilling process can take a while, it took me about 20 minutes with my engraving tool to create the hole, because I didn’t want to force it.
3. Remove the labels by soaking the bottle in hot water.
4. Take some wiring. I live in Holland and know that it’s different in every country. So please ask the store where you buy your wiring from to tell you how to use it! Also make sure that you buy the pieces where you can place the lampshade on.
5. Take the wire and pull it trough the hole.
6. When the wire is running through the bottle, install all the wiring and place the lampshade on top.
All done!

Thank you!
What a cute project! I love it so much that I decided to feature it in our roundup of wine bottle crafts! Check it out here: http://www.favecraftsblog.com/link-love-recycled-wine-bottle-crafts/
Have a great day!
Can i ask what engraving tool you used? Was it an electric one? How did you make the hole big enough for a cable? thanks!
Hi Nancy,
I used this tool:
http://www.lidl-service.com/cps/rde/xchg/SID-09EDACCF-18175404/lsp/hs.xsl/product.html?id=10440061&title=POWER+ENGRAVING+TOOL+PGG+15+A1&count=1
And getting a hole big enough just requires a lot of patience. I first drew a small circles on the glass and followed the line of the circle with the engraving tool. And just kept making circles, until it went all the way through.
Good luck with your project!
Just want to say thank you a lot for your brilliant ideas. THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANKS
And Regards, from Barcelona

Hi Carla!
Thank you so much for those kind words! And please send me a link if you posted your bottle lamp tutorial, I can’t wait to see it!

Hey I was wondering if you think the engraving tool would work on a thicker bottle like Jack Daniels. I want to make a lamp of that for my room but most tuts use a drill and I don’t have one at my apt so the engraving tool would be perfect I just don’t know if it would work on such a thick bottle, any ideas?
Hi Megan!
I think the tool will work, but the bottle I used took me pretty long, so I don’t even dare to guess of how long it will take for a thicker bottle. But in the end it should work :)
But as a side note, a bottle can always break, no matter how precise you are, so be careful!
xx
