My boyfriend and I have been cleaning out our closets and it felt like the perfect opportunity to recycle some of the shirts and turn them into some fabulous new pieces.
So be prepared for the following days, because there will be a lot of upcycling shirts tutorials on the blog!
I hope you’ll enjoy it and let me now what you think!
Supplies: Large shirt | Scissors | Elastic band | Sewing Machine
1. Take one old mens shirt or large women’s shirt.
2. Cut the shirt, just underneath where the sleeves start.
3. Measure an elastic band in the size of your waist. Sew the band to the top of the shirt, make sure that you spread the fabric evenly onto the elastic.

Hi, and thank you for the comment! Let me know how the top works out! xx Lana
Hey this is amazing. I am in the process of attempting to make it, I’m at the stage were I am about to sew on the elastic. How do you sew on the elastic to the non stretch fabric? xxx
Hi caroline! It’s pretty hard to describe how to sew the elastic on without images. So I searched the internet for you and found a youtube video from Vanillajoy and she explains really well how to sew the elastic band onto fabric.

And next time I will try to be more specific in my tutorials.
Good luck with your skirt, and let me know how it turns out!

Hi!This is so cool and i want to try it but i have two quick questions where’d could I get an elastic band and underneath would you just wear spandex shorts or what do you recommend?
Hi, how great that you are going to try the tutorial!
I am afraid that I cannot really tell you where to get the elastic band, because I am from Holland, so it really depends on what kind of stores are in your city or town. But you will probably be able to buy it some sort of fabric or craft shop.
And you can wear anything underneath it I guess:) If yours is a bit see through like mine, you can maybe wear a pare of skin colored boxer shorts or a short pair of leggings underneath it.
Good luck with the tutorial and please let me know how it works out!
As an adorable embellishment, remove the breast pockets from the shirt before cutting and sew them back on just under the elastic band on either side of your hips. Cute, functional front hips pockets!
That’s a great idea! Thank you! I just love the idea of repurposing all the parts of the shirt!
